How does the Search Engine Works – Google, Crawling, Indexing and Ranking

How Does Search Engine work

A search engine is a program or web-based tool that allows users to find out information on the world wide web.

As we mention, in the earlier blog What is a search engine? So now the question is how they do it. I mean tons of websites are available on the worldwide web. How the search engine analyzes those sites.

Firstly, your content needs to be visible on search engines in the search results. If your website is not found they’ll never show up in the search engine result page (SERPs).

Your site content should be clean, fresh, updated and informative.

How does search engine works – Crawling, Indexing, and Ranking

Search Engine has 3 factors:

  1. Crawling – Search Spiders and bot looking for content, code, URLs.
  2. Indexing – Store the information during the crawling process. Once your page is index it has shown results as per relevant queries of users in SERPs.
  3. Rank – Provide information to users. The shown best answer for a user query and results are ordered by the topmost sites and least sites.

Now Let’s study in brief:

Search Engine Crawling

Search engine crawling has a huge set of automated computer software like robots, spiders, bots, etc. So they come up to sites and find a new information and updated content. It could be images, webpage, videos, pdf files, etc. and those are discovered by links.

  • Provide proper meta title and description

The most used search engine is Google – 92.96%

How Google Search Engine Crawling works

Googlebot finds new and updated web pages and added to the Google index. They fetching billions of web pages. So, Google bots use their algorithms methods and determine which site to crawl and how many pages need to fetch each site.

Google started crawling the website URLs and pages with the help of a sitemap submitted to Google with the help of Google Search console or webmaster tools. As google spiders come to each site and collect information and links of each page.

How Google Finds a Page?

Google uses many methods or techniques to find a Page.

  • By the Help of sitemaps
  • With the Help of Links
  • With the help of links coming from other sites.

How to Improve the crawling of your pages?

 To improve the crawling of web pages timely there are some points to keep in your mind.

  • Submit your sitemap to Google for crawling and indexing of your web pages
  • Submit a manual request for a particular page to crawl.
  • Use simple and natural URLs and short URLs that your page crawled fast and easily.
  • Provide clear and simple navigation.
  • Use Robots.txt – It indicates google for which page is to crawl firstly and which is not to crawl. These files are located in the root directory of your website.
  • Use hrflang to read your content in multiple languages.

What is Indexing – How do Search Engine store your pages?

Once your site has been crawled. Now make sure it should be indexed. Just because your site is being crawled by the search engine doesn’t mean it is stored in their index. Previous, we discussed how the search crawls a website.

So, now the index is where your crawled pages are stored. The search engine analyzes the information and stored in its index.

How do you know when the search engines see your pages?

There is a cached version of your web page that shows a screenshot of the last time search engine crawled. Let’s see an example:

You can click on this icon and view the cached version of your site. When did last time your page is crawled? You can check the date and time also when the search takes a screenshot of your site. You can also view the text-only version, by this you can check which content is crawled by bots and spiders.

Tell search Engine how to crawl your site?

Robots.txt or Robots meta tag

With the help of this, you can give instructions to the search engine that how your web page is being treated. You can tell the search engine does not crawl the particular page that you mentioned in the robot.txt file and do not pass the link juice to any page.

The Robot tag is used within <head> of HTML of your Page.

  • Index
  • No-index
  • It tells the search engine whether your page should be crawled or not. When you use “index” that means you want to crawl all of your pages or specific.
  • When you use “no-index” it means you want to exclude the page from search results.

But you don’t worry – By default search engine index all pages until you use the “no-index” tag.

<DOCTYPE html>

<html>

<head>

<meta name = “robots” content=”noindex”/>

</head><body>…</body></html>

This example excludes all the web pages from indexing and from following any on-page links or do not pass any link juice.

Ranking – How does search Engine Rank?

Ranking in Search engine optimization refers to a website position in the search engine result page. There are various ranking factors that search engines used to show up higher results in the search engine page.

Search Engine always used their algorithms methods to store information in their database and show relevance results towards the query. These algorithms are changes every year to improve the quality and quantity of search results. They contain more than 100 ranking factors that search engines are used to give ranking as per those ranking factors.

If we talk about Google, So Google aim when they make any changes to their algorithms, they trying to improve overall search quality. Every factor matter-like website layout, on-page, size, color, navigation, etc.
